James Urquhart Season 1 Episode 101

In this episode, James and Michael break down their recent success with YouTube, particularly Youtube Shorts. Since repurposing their long-form content into clips, it has massively boosted their watch time, views and subscribers. They discuss how you can implement this for your own channel and content, as well as Uber, Surreal and ads we liked this week.

we're going to talk about For. For. For. stop putting them on YouTube and you'd be pleasantly surprised. He. Welcome to the fight Mark. Show everybody. Episode one I want. We recorded this after 99. And because next I know I should have put like a hat on or something. Got that. You've got a happy new hat on. Where is it. It's in my bag. I bought I didn't buy it. That's a total lie. I, I bought a hat for Michael because he got a massive hat and capstone fit in very well. So one size fits all, but it doesn't. Yeah, so I brought in a Lululemon cat. These mike was very expensive. They gave us a bit of a slip. But then I have this near my mouth. I didn't know a lot about Lululemon before this podcast. You and I always thought Lululemon just did yoga pants. Oh, my. But then brand got, like, a a little like a producer on a video and Jason Miller team. So Jason would be proud of you are the, I've got a little fact about Lululemon. Do you know why it was called Lululemon? Yeah. Well, I know what people say. Go on then. I've checked the Wikipedia, and that is actually. Go on. Why did people why did the owner of Lululemon called la la La? Because he didn't want, like, Japanese people to be able to pronounce it. So they just put a shitload of L's in it. And that is actually a fact. Yeah, it's on Wikipedia. That's right. That's that's that's bad. And I love the fact that they're unapologetic is that is why we've done it. Yeah. He's. Yeah. He's very transparent. Who's seen all this stuff with, China on TikTok, comparing it with, the, the, manufacturers of things just saying like, is this bloke who makes all the Louis Vuitton bags, then you can get it for like £20. Amazing isn't it? Yeah. I don't understand all, I think because China's very like, you know, government controlled. So I think they would have had to say you were allowed to do this. So they've probably got a lot of people in to do some anti propaganda type stuff. Yeah there's a lot about that. But Trump has an option. But that's a conversation for another. I don't know enough about politics. We'll put it like this. The second the bull market was hit actually but not long ago because we asked, oh, I have a thing to say as well. So I got, I, we have a few staple things of this podcast that we talk about. We talk about, we talk about running and stuff. Obviously, we talk about hacks, client what's another brand that we always talk about? Has been referenced on this podcast quite a lot. And we always said we're going to try it. And then we never tried. Cyril. Cyril. So my girlfriend just tried. Cyril. Someone at her work shout out to Jasmine Chat where she's not a brand, but I show some stuff she puts up with. Someone at her work had. I think they got like a free box of cereal from somewhere. So they were like, oh, do you want this? And she's like, not really, but she she mentioned it. Someone else in her family because he's going to do the London Marathon. So because there things like a healthy cereal, she offered it to him, but she said it when I was there, I was like, whoa, cereal. We talk about them all the time. So she said she'd bring it back. So I wasn't brought it back. But it's fine. But she says she's tried it, said it wasn't nice. It wasn't nice. It was the the one that looks like Cheerios. That I think is just like a honey cheerio flavor. But she said it tastes like a cereal. But then they've put like like the, you know, like the powdered sweetener on top of it that tastes very like artificial filling because they're not they haven't got sugar in it. So I hate to break it to the guide in the London Marathon. Is it someone in her family just like, well, yeah, it's her sister's husband. Okay. He's a runner, though. He run her brother in law. Yes, but he's not really a relation to me. So I was trying to work out. What? No, no, he's not going to get a better time because he's. He's in sweat. If anything, he's pretty good at winning at worst. No, that's what I mean. He turned it down. He said no, you know I'm on my whatever is on okay. Fair play to him. Yeah. So okay. Now when she brought it up I was like, whoa, can I, can I swing? He's, he's doing the the math, and and my cousin's joining in tomorrow. Nice. Can I swing if you want? I had a race last weekend. Came fifth. How far was that? 50, 52 miles, actually. That's like two marathons, but. So. Yeah, so I was to show you. Can I have a flat can fifth. It's good. I was third for the entire race until I tore a little centimeter or two centimeters in my calf. Just did that with, like, loads with a wall to go. Yeah. No, I was fine. Yeah. So I can fifth. How much did you have to do after you. Did you like in 5KI was that, yeah. So. So it says my again. No. No DNS I'm sorry. No I think guy. What's his face? Guy. Little John put a DNF on LinkedIn. Spent too much of his time. What did you say? It's just not happening. I saw the little title that said something about DNF in a race, and I just thought James is somewhere reading this. You know what? He he doesn't do running, so he does high rocks. And that's his back. He had a his big backpack makes my backpack look small but that's covered in high rocks. Oh my. They love it. These high rocks. He's pretty low. He looks like a fitness. Yeah. It's good. Yeah. I, I, I can sort of understand the high rocks because you're pushing stuff, but running DNF. Just what did he did it for? High rocks. Yeah. Oh, okay. Yeah, but I'm worried about my race and August about DNF. And, I not the one in the water. Yeah. It's of, it's so big I'm worried about that. That's like that's different and it. Yeah. So I'm worried about like the overnights to deal with or not. So two overnights. Yeah. So we'll see how we get on. But yeah. So anyway right we're going to talk about YouTube because we've had a bit of success on YouTube sniff over the last 20 days. And I'm, I'm pleasantly surprised, but also not surprised in the same vein. And I want to get your take on it, Michael. So do you want to sort of tell the listeners what we've been doing on YouTube to date and what we changed about mid to end of March? Yeah. We, we obviously went here when men Nick did the podcast. We spoke briefly at the start because we just sort of in the last few days started doing it then, but we've continued doing it. So all of the right to a thousand users vlogs that we upload on the Rupert Channel, which you can check out in a lovely playlist if you want to see our journey. Thus far we have took all of those and put them into opus, our favorite software, and got loads of clips from them. And then those clips now are going across YouTube and also TikTok, which you just sort of little, little bits out the vlogs, little moments of intrigue, interest. And we put them on YouTube at James's request and they've done well. Yeah. So originally we were just putting, two videos out. Week one was the vlog, which was, you know, on average 17 to 20 minutes. And then we were all set for now. Or did you do that today? They want my LinkedIn live downloaded. I forgot to, Michael downloaded it. And then I was like, oh, it's downloaded now, so I forgot to actually do it. So just for reference. So the second one of what Michael does every week is do my download my LinkedIn, say I've got all light up on my high horse about Trevor. You did what you got on your high horse last week. And you don't need to tell me all your details. I'm impressed with that. Michael and I did it this way because you gave me the, you know, the I'll sniff last week. So you asked me to do some of the in last episode as well. That you said, can you add that to the trailer? What was that coming up, you two old men dinner? Yeah, I want to see the episode back. I'll know what it was. So we were doing that per week, and on average week we put a gap. I don't know, 100 views maybe, but since March 31st. We've now suddenly increased massively. So to give you some data, in February, we had 26,000 views and a watch time of 47 hours. In March we had 8500 views, 64 hours of watch time and hold on, shared Jesse. So you guys have so far in April by mine. And we were recording this as of the 16th, 1803, we've had 25,500 views and 63 hours of watch time unbelievable, Michael. It's good people are liking it, but the watch time is huge. Like 63 load nearly 64 hours of watch time in April. Now let's say that goes over 100 hours in a month. That is massive hundred hours, 4 or 5 days, huge. Absolutely massive. And a lot of that is down to the shorts. And those near those videos are over like a minute or I think across the majority, like 40. So yeah, I tried to have a look when I was doing them. I was like went down the YouTube thing and tried to see all the videos that are doing well. We're all less than a minute, so I've tried to stick to less than a minute ones for the for the shorts go now. But yeah, huge volumes of views like huge. Nice. Good. That's repurposing content that is repurposing content that we've always we've always done that. But I suppose we've not really utilize YouTube shorts very much. We've always been like podcasts like this podcast TikTok or like reels or LinkedIn or whatever. But, well, TikTok's a funny one because, I'm sort of looking at that at the moment, just in terms of our viewership and stuff and it's interesting that we're sort of getting the average views on there is similar to I have one like 700 odd, which is good. But again, if you look at we're doing 2 or 3 of those day, you know, adds up very quickly. Yeah, we've had some of the ones on TikTok lost some of the James Watt ones have done quite well for like a 5000 somewhere. We have we've had A5K. But it goes back to probably what you spoke about last week, which obviously I wasn't here for, but only only briefly. But you know, Nick actually today, actually, Nick can scratchy because he was going you taking me grief out my content. I was the one of all of us going. It's really good content. Yeah. It was, it was less like, haha. Or it was more like we think the content is better, is more like, we don't understand why it's like this. I think Nick's content, fantastic, I think is really engaging. And I think the right person will really appreciate it. And what happened? The person that needed his service really appreciated them on a purchase that, you know, purchase one of his services, like Amazing Nick's content is very good, but it's more niche business. But it he's but like even the 200 is bizarre. But he said to you about putting their stuff on YouTube shorts today. I don't know if you've been able to implement that yet. You didn't need to. Then you knew the answer was no, I was I was trying to think what I can actually put on the. So what do you mean the same videos that. Yeah, but it isn't like those videos. Yeah, but I don't I disagree, I think they're fantastic. Put them on there and prove him wrong. Honestly, his content's really, really good. I don't know his horses. Of course everyone's got opinions, but his content is very good. You know, if you to watch it. It's valuable, isn't it? Because I even when I'm editing stuff, I learn things about, like, you know, he picks up the odd when he says it enough times. You think like, oh, he's very good at Excel. I can't speak more highly enough of this stuff, you know, especially when you listen to what they use. Or is one of his customers is asking and him giving the response and, you know, just giving like, you know, a carb and a cookie cutter advice is sort of like saying, here's you specifically, but I'm bringing in what I've learned from other things to help you with your stuff. Yeah. No, it's it's very, very good. My very good I was yeah I thought this offer is very, very good. Well I do think it's good. And I think you should you can, you can you put on your trailer. But what next YouTube shorts. on. What we should do is we should just not. Because Nick won't listen to this episode because he didn't listen to any episode. So, I mean, he's got better things to do. We could oh, yeah, we could. Just like, he's got, like, kids. He's living on the duff. Nothing today. Like, we we could just, like, get, like, a view bar or something, just to, like, random and just give him, like, 25 years, but just not tell him that we, like, bought it. It. And then, he would just come in one week and be like, you'll never guess this video of me and I got 50. Can we could come I could buy a load of followers for him. Just likes that with a million, though, because if you see this. Oh, no. Wow. You you're content is really paying. Oh my God, you're an influencer now. You're up there with Ben. I feel too bad then, because if we had to tell him that we. That's a bit like we've we've gained the cyst, we've let him win, then we've. He's not. But he knows he hasn't won. There's one. He's in our hearts. You know, something like that. We like YouTube, though. I know YouTube's great. Like, I know you don't watch it as often. No, no you do. Nick doesn't. Yeah, I watch YouTube all the time. I watch him more than TV. I probably watch, you know, college or farm. I've gone off King in the minute that. No, no, I mean, been on, but I watch, you know, a lot of the clips from, from oh, my God, for, I'm obsessed with Lee, you know, so that stuff. So. Yeah. No, I think YouTube is massive. And again, look at the view time 91 hours the last 28 days for our stuff. We've got we're getting recommend some people as well that somebody commented on one of them and said like our this came up in my recommended. So every time we post on YouTube on like my personal YouTube, I just watch to find out. Yeah us recommend recommended to us as well. But we're definitely in the algorithm, which is good and we just need to keep doing it. So let's it's very very good. Very good. So yeah, if you haven't utilize YouTube shorts and you're creating content for longer form content, use things like opus, which is why we pull all our clips from stop putting them on YouTube and you'd be pleasantly surprised. And don't be worried about the volume of which you're posting. Just do. We're doing what, 4 or 5 down? Some of them. Yeah, just just keep blasting it. And yeah, don't worry because the yeah, the viewership you've got from is huge. Obviously people forget about YouTube because they make vertical videos for like Instagram Reels or for TikTok, but YouTube shorts that can go on there as well. Yeah, it's very good. I'm a massive, massive fan. Maximum second I said world on YouTube. Yeah, a lot of YouTube. Google owned by Okay. So what marketing have you seen this week? Oh, it was when I was coming home from this very podcast and I walked through, New Street train station shout out. Yeah, it was quite there. Had a big like I think it was hotel shock a la had this big, display thing that was like a big throne with like a chocolate egg on it. And they had, like, velvet rope around it and some job, some jobsworth guy standing around and some, like, drunk bloke, like, ran it and tried to jump the chair, and the chair was like ten feet tall. And then the guy told him off, which wasn't what I saw. But so that was a tidbit that I, but I saw this, this billboard, it I found the billboard that it was, but it wasn't, it was this was an animated one. So this thing came up that says your override comes with six toilets. And I was like, oh, that's weird. But then the bottom bit comes up and it says trains no on either. So. So that made me I well, I walked past it and I was like, like trains with the toilet. I just thought, it's quite simple. I have another one where it's like you're either will come in seven minutes, 13 minutes, 20 fly, and it also trains on air. Because you can get trains, you can book flights on a banana. Can I tell you a story about you there? You can. I have another story about Uber as well. I can say, do you want to go first? Well, I think this was the same day, so I saw this. Yeah. So that's good. I'll remember that. And then I went home and found it to put on. But I think the very after this, this gentleman picked me up on one of Blair's number, pint I, and took a picture of it. So I was like, look at this massive Uber that's picked just male. Yeah. But as you can see here, he's pops vaguely diagonally in the Uber drop and God. And this bit a. Here is where all the cars from further back drive up. So this man gets out. He's a white Englishman, which isn't as common on either. So I'm scared that he's going to try and talk to me, because most of the time I let him just leave me alone. So he gets out to help me with the beat. Some guys coming up, the thing, and he's like joking out of his window in like, oh, you know, you need to straighten up there. But my, my Uber driver goes into a tirade and starts swearing and saying, you effing this. Get out the car. Like say it. He's like giving him the finger. But the problem is he does this. All this is before my trip's even begun. So he's doing this at the back of the car. He then walks around the front of the car as the guy's driving off. He's still swearing, shouting down the thing at him loudly in front of everybody. So I now get into the Uber and think, now I've got 20 minutes with this guy. He might be a complete psychopath. And he was like, oh, sorry about that, you know, welcome to Birmingham. So, and I wanted it to be over. Yeah. Because you hate anything other than me. Well, yeah. But, you know, that's if you think this guy is behind the wheel trying to get me home, and some guy's just gone, can you pull the back of your thinking? And these come like that? I'm like, this guy could kill me on the road. My story is not as fun, but is more business related. Michael. Okay, so have you noticed why Uber's you've been using Uber for a long time now? You know I'm a big proponent of it okay. Have you noticed it's a little bit more expensive now. Probably. Why do you want to tell me why? I mean, I'm going to tell you why, Michael. But have you noticed that you noticed I'm talking five years ago. I didn't use it. Okay. I started properly using it in the last, like, probably two, three years. Okay, so three years ago, you would have seen there's definitely an increase in cost. Now, the reason for that is when Uber first came to fruition, came to market the investors of Uber actually paid for each person's fare. So they subsidized your fare, which is why it was really cheap. And the reason why they did that was for market adoption. So people become, you know, obsessed, you know, obsessed. But they come, you know, it becomes part of their thing. It becomes habit. So rather than going to local taxi firm, which they used, obviously back in the day, that was how, you know, even I when going out, I was the I worked in the investors knew that if I could get to market and land and expand. And then obviously once I grabbed all of market share, they could that increase the cost because obviously people have already adopted it. And that was what they did in the early stages. So that's how they were able to grow so quickly. Okay. That's a good little tidbit of information, Michael, do you want to know? Do you know what Uber one is? No. Either one is the subscription thing, which I think is a good deal. So the one I'm just going to check I believe it's still really cheap. So Uber one is a Uber's paid thing that saves you money. So it's 499 a month or 50 pounds for a year. But with that you get you you save on every the takes. You get between 5 and 10% off. Every Uber is £15. It's 1.50 pound. Yeah. You also get free delivery on most if not all Uber Eats delivery orders, which you don't use a lot all the time, but you get money off. If you book trains, you can get like cinema tickets at reduced cost. So I was like, If I'm getting Ubers anyway, makes sense. You only have to get four. So of major. Yeah. So since I started using Uber one, which is probably two years, three years maybe. Okay, I've saved 657 pounds by using Uber. Won't know what took 680 trips. 680 trips. Is that try included? Nah, it's just Avis. Jesus Christ, oh. You don't drive. And you? Yes. You don't drive. Nice. There is. So yes, I I've saved nearly 700 pounds by using over one. Very good. I think that there is, there is a little thing in the settings where I can just tell you how much you save. So I thought it's like on my betting account. So tell me how much I've lost profit last the last year. Yes, I think that's good. Yeah, I like that. Congratulations. Shout out to Uber taking my money. Nice. Trying to get less Ubers but it's hard. You know I walk in there. I don't like walking I just you can't walk everywhere. Well, you can really. Oh man I forget if if I go back to New Street, I can't walk from New Street Town with my suitcase for about three hours. Yeah, but you could. Yeah, but when I went for two hours. Is that. Yeah. But you're not normally, you know, even Rupert's even Rupert, bless him, is looking up. He's like, I saw two hairs yesterday down by man. And I don't see hairs very often on the animal buff. So I was enjoying that. We got a guy in our garden. We got Javier. Only the one my mom feeds squirrels cause she just. She got a shout out. She gives, like, bags, you know, monkey nuts. Yeah, it's in the bushes. Okay. She started. She started, like, putting some down, but we got low. There's probably, like, 20 squirrels that come to our garden. I think we've, like, fostered a community of squirrels, but the they're like, open the back door and they'll just like stand next to your feet now. So it's like Snow White. It's brilliant. Thank God for Liam. Well, I didn't want to say a squirrel. Gotta have my glasses. All those birds, we got them all nice. Okay. You put a little a little face on. People could come in a little, like a petting zoo. Good. Well it's good actually. Thought some good value on that. Michael I like to, to sprinkle in tidbits about my life. Yeah. No it's good I feel you know again people learn about over. They probably would have known that in the early stages on investors I didn't buy any. I only know that Gary Vee always talks about how he used to know that paper and passed up on it, and then, yeah, he would have been worth however much money. I suppose if it if you think that's what like comedians have made the joke, but they've said like for their whole childhood they've been taught like don't get into cars with strangers and now, like, parents would prefer they get in a car with a stranger than probably with one of their mates is good. So I think labor's brilliant and it's safe. Although I have to. I'm going to leave with that. We, we do have to leave this episode because I need to go home. I had my Uber account very abruptly canceled. No, he's coming home. No, no, I fear my girlfriend used to scam, this was years ago, by the way. My friend, My friend, we were going somewhere, and, my friend jumped in mind, with which jumping in many lots. And, unfortunately, one of my friends is a bit of a reprobate is probably the nicest way to put it. And, I have found very quickly that my account was shut down, and reached out to the and now I was actually very, very unimpressed with their customer service cos I said, look, you can see how much I use Uber. And I said, no way. We are the, the, the, the ban. The driver was very unimpressed. Now this you this is a story now. So hold on, I've got a guy. Although so this happened while I was going from A to B and I was annoyed and I had a few beers. I then got, we then went back to where we were going. To my friend's house, and the same bloody driver picked me up, picked us up once rather. I was like, so I was looking, I'm going, that's the guy that picked my mate up earlier than me. That's the guy who got me canceled and he was having none of it. I lost it with him. I said, you know what I said? I said, you didn't have to. He said. I said, not tell them. You know, it was me. And he was having absolutely none of it. So I was nobody impressing. Yeah. I've never had I, I used to all over the world, Thailand, all sorts. I have not gone over account and it's actually quite frustrating because now I don't have a car. It's useful. It's useful on occasion I don't use I like to get on both times and get, bolt, bolt in the front here. Are there no bolts? Not very good. New one. It's always So that's what you do when you can't get a noob. So my my girlfriend used to scam, Uber Eats when she was in because Uber Eats has a very lax. I think they've probably changed it. They have a very because they get so many millions of orders. Probably if you just say like it didn't turn up a is rubbish however. Yeah. Like oh they missed one part of my order. They weren't like check. They'll just send you the. So like they've any times I've ever done it is when they've genuinely like if they're supposed to send you, you know, for always whatever they didn't you can say that and they'll just send you the money straight away. Oh I have that a few week or so weeks. But it was kind of comment where it was, I'd have to have a thing. We'll have to leave it there for Diablo Pond Drum. Maybe on the next episode of remember, which we will have, just for context. Yeah, my girlfriend used to. It was just like it never came. And then eventually they caught on because they just said she just. So the whole mail never came and they just riff on the whole thing. I've got this image of Jasmine's account, which is just like order free from there. Like, yeah. And of times. And they were like, oh yeah, she's like more than £700. Anyway, Michael, thank you very much for episode 101. And, and we'll see you next time.
